Released in 2011, True Story captures Future at a pivotal moment in his rise from Atlanta standout to one of the defining voices of modern hip-hop. Hosted by The Empire, the 17-track mixtape helped introduce a much wider audience to the melodic flows, hypnotic hooks and street-rooted Atlanta trap sound that would soon become unmistakably Future.
 
The project features several early Future classics, including “Magic,” “Ain’t No Way Around It” and “Tony Montana,” records that helped build his momentum ahead of his debut album Pluto. True Story also showcases the beginnings of the Freebandz movement, with appearances from Young Scooter, Rocko, Shawty Lo, Waka Flocka Flame and Skool Boy across tracks including “Freeband Gang,” “Out Da Mudd,” “Championship Music,” “One Minute” and “Bigger Picture.”
 
Beyond the breakout records, songs such as “Long Time Coming,” “Smoke & Mirrors,” “Feeling I Get” and “Blast Off” show an artist developing the combination of melody, repetition, emotion and raw street perspective that would influence a generation of rap music. The mixtape closes with “Abu-What Is Pluto,” an early glimpse toward the next stage of Future’s career.
 
More than a decade later, True Story remains an essential piece of Future’s early mixtape catalog and a snapshot of Atlanta rap during a period of major transition. For longtime Freebandz fans and listeners exploring Future’s discography from the beginning, this is one of the projects that documents the sound taking shape in real time.
